How to Choose the Right Rafting Trip for Your Group

A Friendly Guide to Finding the Perfect Comfort Level for Every Age, Skill, and Thrill Threshold

Every group has one: the person who books the trip and tries to make everyone happy. You’re probably that person. And right now, you’re asking: will everyone actually enjoy this?

It’s a fair question. Rafting can feel like a high-stakes choice when your group spans toddlers, grandparents, first-timers, and a teenager who wants the biggest rapids possible. The good news? There’s a perfect trip for everyone: you just need to know where to look.

At Raft Masters, we’ve been guiding families, reunions, and multi-generational groups down the Arkansas River since 1989. Here’s your guide to finding the right fit for your trip.

The Family Float — When No One Gets Left Behind

Ages: 1+ | Duration: 2 hrs total, 1 hr on water | Difficulty: Easy | Price: Adults $95 / Children $75

The safest rafting trip in Colorado. A gentle 5-mile float down the Arkansas River, perfect for toddlers, grandparents, and anyone new to the river. Calm water, scenic views, and zero pressure: with free lunch and souvenir photo waiting back at Raft Masters (Memorial Day–Labor Day).

Choose this if: You have children under 5, guests who prefer calm water.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon — The Sweet Spot for the Whole Family

Ages: 5+ | Duration: 3.5 hrs total, 2 hrs on water | Difficulty: Beginner–Intermediate | Price: Adults & Children $129

The most popular family trip, and for good reason. Nine miles of Class II–III rapids (exciting, not scary), dramatic canyon walls, bighorn sheep sightings, and named rapids like Five Points, Spike Buck, and Shark Thoot. Thrilling enough for teenagers, manageable for kids and first-time adults, and the top pick for family reunions and large mixed groups. Complimentary lunch and photo included Memorial Day–Labor Day.

Choose this if: Your group has mixed ages from 5+, or you’re planning a reunion or group outing where everyone needs to feel comfortable.

Royal Gorge — For the Thrill-Seekers

Ages: Varies (consult Raft Masters) | Difficulty: Advanced (Class III–IV) | Duration: Half day or full day

Powerful Class III–IV rapids through one of the deepest canyons in North America. Best for adventurous adults and older teens who want a genuine challenge. Choose the half-day for concentrated adrenaline or the full-day experience with lunch included.

Choose this if: Your group consists of adults or older teens ready for the most intense experience available.

What About Split Groups?

You don’t have to pick just one trip. Many multi-generational groups send younger kids and grandparents on the Family Float while adventurous adults tackle Bighorn Sheep Canyon or the Royal Gorge. Both groups finish at Raft Masters and reunite for lunch and photo. Check our group planning options for large party coordination.

Every Trip Includes:

  • All river gear: wetsuits, boots, splash jackets at no extra charge
  • Free lunch & souvenir photo: Memorial Day through Labor Day
