Come to Raft Masters and float on the Arkansas River under the “Over the River“ project by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Experience the thrill of Colorado whitewater and the beautiful Royal Gorge region and get some culture too. We will offer half day, full day and multi day trips during the two week period of “Over the River”.
“Over the River” is a temporary work of art by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Christo plans to suspend 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels high above the Arkansas River along a 42 mile stretch of river between Salida and Canon City, CO (south central Colorado). The artists visited 89 rivers and traveled 14,000 miles in seven Rocky Mountain States in search of the best location for “Over the River”. The Arkansas River was the lucky winner that the artists chose for their project.
“Over the River” is more than just a way to experience the rapids of the Arkansas River with Raft Masters, “Over the River” is a large scale outdoor installation art project created by artists Christ and Jeanne-Claude. Christo is hoping to exhibit the project for a two week period of time in August of 2014. The plan is to suspend approximately 5.9 miles of fabric panels horizontally above the Arkansas River in eight selected areas that runs parallel to Highway 50. The semi-transparent, silvery panels will be suspended over cables anchored high on the banks of the river so rafters can experience the project from below, while travellers on Highway 50 will be able to enjoy it from above.
What better way to experience the “Over the River” project than on a mild rafting trip on a class III whitewater trip. You will get to experience the project as the artist intended, you will see the fabric panels from above on our way to the river rafting put in and then by rafting the class III rapids beneath Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “Over the River” installation project!
